Satoshi Kon began his career as a manga artist and went on to direct four feature films, each of which dramatized the relationship between dreams and reality.

Paprika, released in 2006, concerns the attempts of research psychologist Doctor Atsuko Chiba to reclaim a stolen Dream Hacking device by entering the dream-vistas of her colleagues and patients. It’s as visually entertaining as it is intellectually thought-provoking.

Christopher Nolan is said to have based his subsequent SF blockbuster Inception on concepts from Kon’s final film, and much as I like Inception, I love Paprika.
